artistic statement

“I dont think there’s really any moving forward. I think there’s just moving along” (Lettie, by Boo Killebrew).

I am a Chinese American human who lived overseas growing up (Kenya, and Uganda). I share stories highlighting my identity, lived experience, and ideals. I love telling stories that are modern interpretations/retellings/or inspired by myth, folklore, legend, epics, or tales.

I make theatre that can only be done on stage, in front of an audience - always acknowledging the relationship between actor and observer. With Brecht influence, the alienation effect is always a tool to be considered in my work. The combination of physical theatre, puppetry, mime work, and technology draws the audience towards what makes theatre irreplaceable.

I am obsessed with how we navigate the family we are born with and the family/community that we choose to exist in. Stories that force the character to rectify themself amidst the tension of a world that forces us to define ourselves. I believe in stories that break tradition to fix them, twist the suspension of disbelief, and cultivate an eager empathy from the audience.

As the Artistic Director for Pocket Theatre VR, I am dedicated to making theater accessible through all media. I believe that Virtual Reality can break down barriers in Theater. Virtual Reality provides access to those unable to attend a performance, it opens gates confining the art we are making and provides opportunities for artists in a more immersive format.

Growing up, I fell in love with theater and what it can do in a community and imagination - aligning the childhood promise of theatre to current reality is why I am in this profession.
